Mixed Texture

Sometimes, characteristics of more than one type of texture are present. If there are two or more melodic voices plus chordal accompaniment, the texture is "mixed."

** IMPORTANT DEFINITION**
Mixed Texture consists of multiple melodic voices plus chordal harmony. Both vertical and horizontal relationships are present among notes in different voices

One common way for mixed texture to occur is for rounds or partner songs (or any polyphonic music) to be sung, along with chordal accompaniment on an instrument. The example below shows mixed texture since it is a round with chordal accompaniment.

First, click the play arrow to hear the harmonic ostinato alone.

Next, listen to the song as a round with chordal accompaniment.
