Rounds and Canons

Another type of song that can produce polyphonic texture is a "round" or "canon." These are melodies which are written in such a way that they can be performed by more than one musical voice, starting at different times, to produce harmony. An example of a familiar round is "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." Click the play arrow below to hear it played as a two-part round.

** IMPORTANT DEFINITION **
Rounds and Canons are melodies which can be performed by independent musical voices starting at different times to produce harmony.
